Karl started fishing for ideas on the reddit website. Basically 'I created an MORPG and people played it for a while, but I have no time to develop it further. What should I do?' He mentioned the fact that Open Sourcing was an option, and the reddit programming community explained what kind Open Source copywriting was available. Karl found that the GNU licensing allowed for a very exciting future for the game.

The Reddit Article is here.

His brief history of the project and inspirations are here.

=D!

Edit- Another really good article on this subject is on Evidyon's About Page

i've seen at times when people release their project, it results in people ripping parts of the code for their own game.
Also, i've seen people re-name a project, change the GUI, and claim it as their own work.

this engine is very nice, even though i don't know C++.
the C++ syntax confuses me, I'm proficient with Visual Basic 6 and pretty good using Java

Yes, these are both things that I was concerned about when releasing, but not hugely so; it's fairly easy to tell if someone does that, and the licensing I chose assures they have to credit us and release their source. Besides, I'd be excited to see derivative projects! I'm trying to find a job at this point, so the more attention Evidyon gets the better.

If you're starting C++, I wouldn't suggest going with Evidyon first... it's a bit hairy O.o

I have only one goal with studying C++ myself, and that is to eventually release the epic amazing game that me and my best friend have been talking about creating for 3 years now. It will most likely never come to fruition because he and I are both restaurant professionals, but it is a hobby we love to talk about every time we get together. I look forward to studying C++ the 'hairy' way and challenging myself to do something the way it shouldn't be done.

That said, I'm reading every online tutorial that looks like it makes a bit of sense. =/ :P

Sounds like what I did! I'm about to upload another project you guys might find even more useful, actually. Give me an hour or so to get it together.
